Description
The dark rain clouds were heavily banded with gravity waves. The winds riding along and over the warm frontal surface were causing waves in the stable surface at the base of the warm air. Bands of elevated convection were occurring with the upswing parts of those waves. When the bases of those rain clouds become indeterminate you can be pretty certain that rain is occurring. The rain drops are much larger than the cloud particles and although water is colourless, the drops themselves are pretty good at scattering the light found in the scene. Mie scattering of this light by the large rain drops tends to scatter most of the energy in a forward direction away from the source. With heavy rain there is still ample scattering in the opposite direction as well. Very heavy rain tends to be white like homogenized milk. I could hear the rain starting to cross the lake as it approached in a white veil of wetness. The colour of clouds and rain is an ongoing investigation.
Rain started hard at 9:15 am but I was essentially done. There is nothing like the weather to hurry along those painting decisions. If you don't paint the clouds the way they look at that moment in time, they will be gone while you worry.
I enjoyed the spring time green colour of the budding leaves. The rain turned the plein air into a studio day - and the temperature quickly cooled to the dew point...
